There have already been a lot of shocks and big changes in The Power Rankings (TPR) in the NHL power rankings week 2 of the 2024–25 season. It’s easy to get too excited early in the season, but every game is still important, even in October. It’s too early to say what will happen, but we can start seeing patterns as teams get into their grooves. Based on week 2 of the TPR, here is a full breakdown of all 32 teams.
32-25: Struggles, Surprises, and Early Disappointments
32. San Jose Sharks (Before: 32)
The Sharks are still at the bottom of the list. Their slow start isn’t a surprise since they didn’t make much of a fuss during the off-season. Most of their spots don’t have enough depth, and there aren’t any early signs of big improvements. It looks like San Jose will have another long season ahead of them.
31. Philadelphia Flyers (Before: 25)
The Flyers’ drop from 25th to 31st shows how bad their start has been. They haven’t been able to stay consistent on both ends of the ice. Goaltending and defense are two big problems. Their young core has a lot of promise, but they haven’t won yet.
30. Columbus Blue Jackets (Before: 31)
The Blue Jackets have moved up one spot but haven’t shown they’re ready to play at a higher level yet. Their defense is still a big problem, and their offense hasn’t been able to compensate. They need to make changes if they want to move up the Power Rankings Week 2 list.
29. Chicago Blackhawks (Before: 29)
The Blackhawks remain in 29th place. They have had moments of brilliance, but they still lack the consistency needed to move up the ranks. Even though their young team is fighting hard, it’s clear that this is a recovery year for Chicago.
28. Buffalo Sabres (Before: 28)
The Sabres are still having problems, and they’re having trouble in every part of the game. It’s not been a good start for a team that many people thought would make progress. They’ll have to get better if they want to get out of the bottom tier of the TPR.
27. Anaheim Ducks (Before: 30)
The Ducks move up three spots, showing they can be competitive early on and keep games close. They won’t be in the running this season, but it’s good to see their young players getting better.
26. Montreal Canadiens (Before: 27)
The Canadiens also rose. Even though the results haven’t always gone their way, they have shown grit in their games. They might be able to move up the ranks if they had a more balanced attack and better goaltending.
25. Nashville Predators (Before: 8)
There were many big drops in Power Rankings Week 2. The Predators fell from eighth to twenty-fifth. Even though they had a good summer, they still haven’t won. The team’s bad start is partly due to disjointed play, weak offense, and bad goaltending. They need to find the answers so they don’t dig too deep.
24-11: The League’s Middle Tier – Mixed Results and Early Potential
24. Detroit Red Wings (Before: 21)
The Red Wings have lost a few games but are still improving compared to previous years. Their young stars are getting better, but they still have problems with regularity that keep them from making it into the top 20.
23. Pittsburgh Penguins (Before: 20)
Pittsburgh’s drop in the rankings is due to problems with their goalie, Tristan Jarry. If the Penguins want to stay in the running this season, they need a defense that works better.
22. Colorado Avalanche (Before: 10)
The Avalanche have been having trouble with inconsistent keeping, which has caused them to fall from 10th to 22nd. Alexandar Georgiev hasn’t been stable enough, and this is affecting the whole team. They have a lot of star power, but they’ll need to find the answers.
21. Edmonton Oilers (Before: 9)
The Oilers have had slow starts before, but they are already behind schedule. Since they made it so far in the playoffs last year, they may be weak early on. But they need to find a way to get back up the rankings.
20. Ottawa Senators (Before: 23)
The Senators have risen a little, showing they are tough and competitive. Their young core players are learning a lot, and they look like a team that can make some noise as the season goes on.
19. New York Islanders (Before: 17)
The Islanders’ drop to 19th shows how difficult it is for them to be consistent. Their defense is still strong, but their offense has been hit or miss, making it hard to assemble wins.
18. Minnesota Wild (Before: 24)
The Wild’s rise to 18th place is a good sign because of better play. Even though they need more scoring power, their performance so far suggests that they could be a surprise this season.
17. Los Angeles Kings (Before: 14)
The Kings have lost a few spots, but they still have a lot of promise. They have the skills to move back up the TPR if they can tighten their defense.
16. Vancouver Canucks (Before: 16)
The Canucks are still in 16th place. There have been times when they looked like a good team, but there are still concerns about their consistency, especially on defense.
15. Washington Capitals (Before: 22)
The Capitals have shown they can still fight by moving up seven spots. Washington may still have more fights in them than most people thought after three straight wins against top teams.
14. Seattle Kraken (Before: 26)
Seattle went from being ranked 26th to 14th, one of the biggest jumps. With a 4-2-0 record, they’re off to a good start and look like they could do better than expected this season.
13. St. Louis Blues (Before: 18)
The Blues are getting better, thanks to even scoring and good goaltending. They’ve shown they can play with teams higher in the rankings, and it looks like they’ll keep going up.
12. Vegas Golden Knights (Before: 11)
It might not be because the Golden Knights played wrong; other teams have been more reliable. Some of their best players are still on the team.
11. Calgary Flames (Before: 19)
The Flames move up eight spots because of their strong start. If they keep going in the same direction, their early momentum could make them buyers at the deal deadline.
10-1: The Early Contenders Emerge
10. Carolina Hurricanes (Before: 7)
The Hurricanes drop but remain a strong team. Their depth and talent keep them within the top 10, but they need more consistent scoring to maintain their position.
9. Tampa Bay Lightning (Before: 15)
Tampa Bay moved up to ninth place by getting better. After all, the team will be a contender, and their scoring depth is beginning to show.
8. Toronto Maple Leafs (Before: 12)
The Maple Leafs moved up to eighth place. Their early games have shown that they are a well-balanced team that can compete for the league’s top spots. If they can keep up their current form, they could be strong contenders.
7. Boston Bruins (Before: 4)
The Bruins’ small drop isn’t due to bad play but to tough early games. Still, they have one of the better all-around teams in the NHL and are set up for a good season.
6. Utah Hockey Club (Before: 13)
Utah HC has been the story of the early season, with four wins and one loss in their first six games. Another early surprise in TPR power rankings week 2 is how well they started their first season of the NHL.
5. Florida Panthers (Before: 5)
The Panthers are still in fifth place, thanks to an evenly matched group. Based on their performance, they look ready to compete again this season.
4. New Jersey Devils (Before: 6)
The Devils keep getting better. With a fast-paced offense and strong defense, they could soon be one of the best teams in the East.
3. Dallas Stars (Before: 1)
The Stars lose the top spot but are still among the best teams. Although their goalie is a concern, their offense is strong enough to keep them in every game.
2. New York Rangers (Before: 3)
With early consistency and strength, the Rangers move up to second place. Based on their play, they could be a top threat all season.
1. Winnipeg Jets (Before: 2)
A perfect start to the season puts the Jets at the top of TPR. At this point, they are the only team that hasn’t lost, thanks to good offensive and defensive play.

Teams will keep moving up and down in The Power Rankings (TPR) as the season progresses. Both well-known teams like the Jets and Rangers and those that came as a surprise early on, like the Utah Jazz, will attempt to secure their positions.
